Overton Window

Do you remember when public policy
Was partially inspired by things that people in the public thought the policies should be?

Or how about back when human life
Had implicit value
And the sky looked limitless?

I can’t believe I missed that show
Since my whole lifetime or so ago
They made a judgement call:
Airplanes fly much better with two right wings
Now we spiral and it’s tough
GDP can’t get enough
It grows and grows, that’s how we know
That we’re doing all the right things

Look through the Overton Window
(Overton Window)
You can’t watch things fall before your eyes
If blindfolded by compromise
Look more closely, you will find a clue, all for you
And that dynamic point of view

Dude, why you bummin’?
It’s been a long time comin’
Everybody agrees, so just enjoy the breeze
(Overton Window)
Ain’t this what you wanted?
To just be left alone
And mind your own business
At the future’s expense?
(Overton Window)

I know I look strange when I shout
To all you people looking out
Your own windows, nobody knows
What’s it’s supposed to look like
Looks right to me
Now there’s water and there’s sky
I’m not a “take sides” kind of guy
And blue is blue, yeah, both things are blue
So they’re equally good choices

Through the Overton Window
(Overton Window)
You won’t see us crash into the ground
Shards of glass flying all around
If it hasn’t happened yet, for all we know it never will
And we’ve still got time to kill

Do you think that when the red lights come on
And all the oxygen masks fall out, maybe then this will seem urgent to someone?
Oh, you say it happened awhile back?
I never noticed, I was too enamored with my flexibility and tact

Thanks to the Overton Window
(Overton Window)
They can’t find that wreckage in the deep
Once again, we climbed too steep
Way up there in the sky, we had it all
What a ball
From what I can recall...
